I recently read the article, An Argument against Television for Children Apparently this article was written many years ago. I could not find a date. Today, June 20th, 2009 I, as a parent would never, never leave any child in a room where a television is displaying any broadcast program. The only way for children and families to safely watch television in these modern times is to disconnect. Disconnect from all cable, satellite and even antenna broadcasts. DVDs and VHS tapes offer the only solution and those must be pre-screened by the parents if we are to shield our children from the sewage flowing from broadcast television in this decade. Just the thoughts of a parent of 3 children, 2 teens and a 2 year old.

Hi alaskaalive, welcome to Family Lobby! I don't watch tv anymore myself and only use my set for DVDs. Not because of the rubbish that's on it that I wouldn't watch anyway but because I get all my news etc online and have no need for it. I can understand you feeling the need for constant supervision but how practical in reality is that? TV's not all bad, though admittedly there's a lot of junk on it. But if you were to stick to educational and age appropriate shows then surely that would be okay?

I have no issues with television. for me, and some nights, the whole family, it is a time to sit down and unwind ... escape briefly from the stresses of the day. some of the shows that we watch as a family stir conversations that I would NEVER want to miss! fantasy, reality, sci fi, discovery ... so much learning can come from television. I respect your thoughts on this, but I have to say that there is much to be offered from television and I see little that is unsafe providing a parent is willing to discuss with their child any questions they may have.

I agree with dianerene, watching t.v helps to unwind at the end of the day...for example I am and AVID dancing with the stars fan and usually my little one watches with me. It's a nice little cozy time for us. During the day she watches t.v for preschoolers..admittedly I let her watch too much ( ) but a lot of times I watch with her and she learns a lot of amazing things. She knows her shapes and colors and numbers even before she's started preschool, and once pointed at my guitar and said, "That's a bass!" I think it would've been reasonable to argue against children's television some decades ago when it was mostly just silly cartoons, but nowadays I really think that they are gearing children's t.v more toward educational things, esp. for small children.
