I managed to pull one in my calf this morning. I was trying to contort myself to shut the dogs in behind me so I could answer the front door and as I stepped down into the sunroom, yowsa! Man, it hurt like heck and has done all day. I can't put my foot flat or my weight on it and it's sore all the way down the back of my calf. I'm now hobbling round lopsided using just my tiptoes on that leg like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I tried a pain pad on it and that didn't help. I've since strapped it up with a support bandage which made it feel marginally better, and just now took a hot bath. That felt better when it was in the water but not now I'm out. Anything else I can do for it or just have to wait it out? So frustrating.

Ouch! be careful with heat right away. Always use ice for the first 24 hours. After that gentle heat and gentle stretching. Also, and I hate to say this, be careful with wraps....unless a Dr says to use them they can cause more damage than good.

So I did everything wrong I could have, huh? I'll know better next time. Hoping there won't be a next time though! It's a lot better now, thank goodness, just the odd yelp coming out of me when I jar it like if I'm going down stairs. It's worst first thing in the morning when it's stiffened up overnight but apart from that, much better. Thanks for the tips!

Awww, glad you're feeling mostly better.  Maybe up your potassium a bit too, that usually helps, like a banana or Gatorade.  Trust me , I only know the tips because I've done it, oh so many times!

I like bananas but not Gatorade. Actually I've been eating a lot of them this week as I thought hubby's may have been low and was looking up potassium rich foods. Apparently canteloupe's good too if you like that. I love them.

Ever since I did that I get the odd day like today when it feels like the whole calf muscle is tightening up and is stretched to its limit. It's tight as a drum. The feeling runs right down from the back of my knee to my ankle. It's not that sore, more annoying than anything else and nothing like it was when I hurt it the first time.

Hmmm, maybe see your Dr just to make sure you didn't tear anything?  When I do that, mine stay tight for awhile too though, and of course good ole stress doesn't help.

I will if it gets worse or more frequent. I'm not so concerned since it's just the same as yours when you do it. Sitting at a desk all day where it's not getting flexed much probably doesn't help. Thanks for the info.

I was thinking of you last night! I could feel my left calf muscle twisting and I was so nervous it was going to flip into a charlie horse. I moved super slow and prayed, lol. I didn't get one, but that usually means one is on deck for me.

Yowsa, lucky that you had the space to do that. It's awful at the best of times but when driving?! I'd have been scared stiff. Were you in the car alone?

for charlie horses and other cramps ... try adding a little calcium before bedtime.  I have started taking it with my evening meds and it has nixed the horrible foot cramps I would get in the middle of the night.  I was worried it would mess with my kidney stones again, but so far so good!

Hubby gets terrible foot cramps too, diane. He's been suffering them a lot in recent months and I think it's a side effect of his meds. Can you tell me what you take in more detail please eg is it a pill? How many mgs?

Wonder if a glass of milk before bedtime would help...what do you guys think?

Hmm, never heard of adding calcium. I have always heard potassium. I think milk wouldn't hurt, give it a whirl and see. I wish I drank it I would try it too.

Yeah, I don't think it would do him any harm. If I make it into hot chocolate that might even help him sleep.

Obviously it's working for diane-and long may it last for you, girl! :)

I take two capsules before bed time - citracal with vitamin D - 2 capsules is 600mg.  you're supposed to take them twice a day, but I am hesitant because of my kidney stones and so far, so good.

I had always heard potassium for cramping as well, and I think that is the more common solution.  when my first thyroid test came back totally out of whack, I started looking into it and found that calcium deficiency (your parathyroid glands monitor the levels of calcium in your body) will also cause cramping.  I tried it and so far it has worked WONDERS

I'll mention it to him, thanks dianerene. I'm thinking his was more to do with one of his meds because he's not been suffering it too much recently whereas before it was all the time, and some had been changed. Good to know though.
