We've all heard the mother-in-law jokes. Do you think they really are like the jokes? Interfering, overbearing etc. Mine wasn't bad at all really. :)

Mine wasn't either actually.  My boyfriends Mom is awesome too, so I think it is just an easy out and something or someone to pick on.

I don't believe in the mother-in-law stereotype.  We are all different and sometimes MIL and DIL have clashing personalities.  My MIL has her own daughter and she's made it perfectly clear she doesn't need any more even though she's got 3 DIL's.  She's completely absorbed with her daughter and her kids to give any thought to the rest of her family.  But.....that's the way she was raised so I just accept it and live my life without her.  It is sad though as I would love to have a MIL that wanted to spend time with me.

I think it's like all stereotypes ... there are a few bad ones out there that give all of them a bad rep.

Thelma, you should consider it a narrow escape. Mine was initially so overbearing I felt smothered. She had 5 sons and no daughters and wanted me to be hers basically. She always said I was the daughter she never had, which was a bit embarrassing for me. Eventually I had to sit her down and have a chat about how much time I could realistically spend with her vs do my work, take care of home, family etc. It was sad really because she had only one other daughter in law and the d-in-law hated her guts, but in hindsight she could have done the same to her years before and built up resentment. After we talked she and I managed to find a level we could both be happy with and I could enjoy her company again but when I was getting in from work to find her at my door night after night after night or phoning all the time, it was getting very old very fast.

She no longer calls me nice things since I divorced her son after 16 years (because of his alcoholism). Lots of short words, but not daughter.

I think they do get bad press...I think some are just very overbearing like fiery's experience shows. I guess I was luckier because mine is just wonderful. Maybe the horror stories are just enough to get everyone on edge!

True, Sandy. There's no smoke without fire. Of course now I'm a mother I know that no woman will be good enough for my son, ha!
