This worries me when I read of a teen getting dx'd with a rare muscle disorder, Guillain-Barre syndrome, hours after getting the H1N1 shot. Have they rushed this out without sufficient tests and put speed over safety?

quote:

Jordan McFarland, a high school athlete from Alexandria, Va., left Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children Tuesday night in a wheelchair nearly a week after developing severe headaches, muscle spasms and weakness in his legs following a swine flu shot. He will likely need the assistance of a walker for four to six weeks, plus extensive physical therapy.

I'm not sure how safe they are compared to other vaccines but I don't feel comfortable getting one or having my kids vaccinated for the swine flu.  I'd rather take my chances with getting the virus.  Nobody in my house has any underlying health problems so I don't feel the risk of vaccination complications are worth it.

I agree, I don't trust them...just a gut feeling.

It's a dilemma for sure. I think I'd be more inclined to get it if we had underlying health issues like you mentioned Thelma but we don't. Anyway, I hate needles LOL. I've never trusted vaccines much since my son got his MMR and had a bad reaction to it. To this day I blame his Aspergers on that.

What does concern me too is that the predictions are coming true that the virus would mutate, which could render vaccines ineffective anyway at some point in time. Goodness knows how many times it will do that before it's gotten rid of entirely.

quote:

OSLO - Norwegian health authorities said Friday they have discovered a potentially significant mutation in the H1N1 influenza strain that could be responsible for causing the severest symptoms among those infected.

"The mutation could be affecting the virus' ability to go deeper into the respiratory system, thus causing more serious illness," the Norwegian Institute of Public Health said in a statement.

I don't know whether it is safe or not, but my youngest daughter's pediatrician said he is NOT giving it to any of his kids - even the ones at risk. He said the regualr flu kills more people every year and we still need to be more concerned with that.

I have had the flu shot 2 times in the last 11 years ... both times I was required by law (I was a county employee that worked with children ages 0 - 18) and both times I got the flu. Now I know that people will say there is not a live strain of flu in the vaccine and the shot did NOT make me sick, but I have YET to get the flu since then.

Hubby says the same thing diane. He had to get a flu shot for work once years ago and was very, very sick with the flu afterwards. He swore then he'd never get a flu shot again and never did.

You had the swine flu? Tell me this then. Did you feel as if you had a weight on your chest? I wondered if hubby had that the last time he got the flu, not this time. Can you get it again if you get it once?
