If your child suffers from insomnia, it is unlikely to be just he or she that is unable to sleep at night. As a parent, your child's sleep patterns also affect you, as well as other members of the family.

My child is only three years of age and it worries me when she has such bad sleeping habits. She goes to sleep at about 22:00 because she refuses to sleep earlier than that. Its been three weeks since she's had a peaceful rest. She goes to bed, falls asleep but then wakes up at about 2:00 in the morning and thats when nobody can sleep anymore. We've taken her for check-ups but there's nothing wrong according to the doctors. What else can we do?

We went through a bit of that and we had to let him be. We turned off the baby monitor and sort of forced him to comfort himself and learn to fall back asleep. It took time and patience but as long as their is nothing physically wrong then she has to learn on her own or else she will grow up without the ability to get herself back to sleep which can lead to many sleepless nights as an adult.

Just tell her to stay in bed, and play quietly. When she's tired enough she'll sleep. She is probably in this pattern now, it's breakable, trust me!

Christine - Im not sure if you are still in the middle of this awful time or not? I'm 8 weeks in to the same experience with my 3 year old son, and as a working single parent of 3 I feel exhausted and snappy the entire time. How are things with you?
