If people are angry about the early sexualization of girls, I think getting angry at Bratz dolls is beside the point.

I do not approve of Bratz dolls for my daughter. I would not allow her to wear hooker boots with fishnet pantyhose so why let her play with a doll that wears this? The less trashy influences she has around her the better.

Im 15 and yes these dolls may have to much in the front and in the back but they are dolls. If you teach your child that real ppeopledont look like this ( well most people dont) they well know that this is just playtime and it is nor life. And plese stop critazizing(yes i spelled it wrong) the doll if you dont want to buy one dont.

Barbie and Bratz dolls are sexist and a degradation of females. Women will always be seen as sub-human, no matter what, if we keep this up.

Hello everyone, im a mom and I couldn't help but disagree with part of your article. I have a 12 year old daughter who is into sports art hanging out with friends and she DOES have a boyfriend. No i do not let them go anywhere alone and he is a nice boy he comes to our house and they talk and play and he helps her study. I think it is important for young girls to get an experience with boys so they no what they want when they are older. but this is not the point i let my daughter play with bratz dolls and barbies and myscenes. They DID sexualize her much more that i wanted but, she is still also a loving caring 12 yr old girl too. what i did for her and this is my advice for other moms too is that you need to draw a line like go out with your daughter and buy clothes for barbie and bratz that are OK not revealing but cute and stylish, so they learn they cna be beaatiful without the revealing stuff thanks for your time.

Nice to meet you Katy, welcome to Family Lobby. :) I think you have a workable balance there. I had friends that were boys at 12, but not a boyfriend as such. My dad would have freaked. You have them well supervised obviously and that makes a huge difference I think, as does going for cute and stylish and not revealing clothes. Nice to have you here.

Welcome aboard, RickRoll. :) Women are only seen as subhuman by those who choose to see it that way. They aren't always seen like that in my experience.

I could complain that G.I.Joe's sexist and a degradation to males because of his overdeveloped pecs which present a distorted view of what the average male body is like. Quite honestly I don't see what all the fuss is about nor the difference. He's a doll and so are they. The more fuss adults make over how terrible or dangerous a toy is, the more kids want it. That's just the nature of kids. Kids will tire of them soon, same as any other toy.

Unless we plan to keep our kids away from TV, the internet, and now toy stores apparently, there's no way around them seeing some kind of exposure of the female form, whether blatant or subtle, sexy or not. Heck, a walk around the mall on a summer's day will show off more bare flesh per square inch of scantily clad folks from kids to adults, both male and female, than I ever want to have to see in my life. We cannot cushion them entirely from real life. What we can do is teach them like Katy said that they don't have to be revealing or dress sexy to be beautiful or likable.

i read this and i am like wow! what is the difference?! I agree with anonymous..both as adults say "have a bad image" but that is our parents job( im 12) to educate us in a way that we can tell the difference from what is right and wrng! we need to be told that lingerie barbie is a toy and real life girls where jeans and not too short shorts and things like that! Parents shouldn't complain! And bratz and barbie both show a bad image!

The fact that you have been convinced that barbie is a better example of positive portrayal of women is a perfect example of society's ignorant attitudes (and lack of). 'Barbie spends her time challenging male-dominating roles such as doctor and scientist. The Bratz dolls, however, seem to hold a superficial mentality based on materialism.' Are you kidding? When barbie is portrayed as a doctor or a scientist, no doubt is she always wearing short labcoats and skanky doctor's uniforms. With this attempt at putting barbie into a 'male-dominated' role such as these, comes the hidden sexist attitudes that cannot be seen by people such as you. If anything, this hidden sexist message is even worse than blatent, obvious sexist messages.

You can't really compare on the occupation, considering the Bratz are high schoolers, therefore they don't have jobs, although in the Bratz movies they do usually "save the day". Also, most of my Bratz dolls wore nice clothes like jeans, tees, evening gowns etc, and i have seen a lot of Barbies with pink minis and tight tops. Also, Barbies are blonde, tan and with a very fake body, whereas Bratz come in all skin colours, and there have even been Bratz with glasses, in wheelchairs etc as the Bratz are said to be friends with all types of people, whereas Barbies friends are all tan with long hair and the same bodies. I am not nessiscarly biased for Bratz, but I am trying to show the arguments for Bratz,as your artical is very one-sided.

I am an advertising student, and I think these dolls are an outrage. The creator and owner of BRATZ full out confessed that young girls these days do not want to be aspiring to become doctors or astronauts... they want to be like a BRATZ doll... what, a STRIPPER! I am appalled by what is put in our advertisements and media these days, all it says is that women and girls are good for one thing, SEX. Agree or disagree, but take a good look at the music videos, ads, and celebrities your children see on a daily basis. Its disgusting. You see over 3,000 ads a day! YOU DONT HAVE TO BE SEXY TO FIT IN!

There is absolutely a BIG difference between Barbie and Bratz. Barbie might have had some controversial moments (some that I agree with, and some that I roll my eyes at), but in general, she has been a good role model. The few controversies are far outweighed by her overall image. Her clothes can sometimes be short, she wears bikinis, etc. etc., but they are hardly ever, if ever, skanky.Bratz on the other hand, advocate rebellion just in the name alone, much less with the hooker clothes that is the NORM of their line, not the exception. Last time I checked, being a brat was a BAD thing. While some pre-teens might truthfully know more than they should, being stripped of innocence at 10-12 is NOT a good thing. They are too young to act with responsibilty on things they think they understand, but really don't.I'm really curious how many parents who let their kids play with Bratz are teenage moms, and/or come from broken homes. I don't imagine the number is small.

I can see why people would chose Bratz over Barbie.I mean, Barbie's fashion is mostly for younger kids while the bratz is for older. Now bratz are just that. They have to have the nicest, sparkerlyish, hookeryish, slutish, exc. -ish thing out there while barbie could go in a simple tee. For little kids (x-9) i say barbie. For kids my age (11-x) i think its alright to have a bratz. its just if you surround your child or yourself with slutish people, then most likely you will slowly turn into it. If you "play" out there lives, then you might as well be liveing it. just as simple as that. I truthfuly think they need to stop or limit bratz and barbie production. i can almost garintee that there will be a decreess in see through or longera like outfits in the world or if you want to streach further a decreess in under aged pregnicies. Yes i know this might not be correct (i am only 13) but im almost possitive. take it or leave it.

i think that all the arguing about bratz v. barbies is pointless because you can say they are bad all you want but people are gonna keep on buying them. im 16 and i grew up playing with bratz dolls and with barbies and i played with them just the same. after bratz came out i would just use them as the teenage children and use my barbies as the moms. i agree that sometimes they can make the bratz dressed a little but sluty but if you dont want your kid to play with those ones then dont buy those ones. plus if you want to argue that barbies always are doing great jobs like doctors and such then thats not very true because i have a barbie that came in baggy low riding jeans and a tight belly shirt that is supposed to be a hip hop barbie so they both have there down sides but they are not all bad and they are just dolls if you dont like them dont buy them.
