Hi Rico, nice to meet you. Can you say more about why you feel the family is not right for you? What age are you now? If you tell us a bit more we can make suggestions more easily.

Hi Rico, welcome aboard. I agree with fiery, if we knew a little more we might be able to help. Your age now would be a great way to kick things off....

I am a little confused by your post. By letterbox contact, do you mean can they write to each other, via mail?

Also confused by who the stepmother is....is that the adopted Mom?

every adoption is different and details vary depending on the type of adoption and where it took place.  private adoptions and state adoptions also vary.
if the adoption was a closed one, no information passes between the adoptive and biological families.  I think now-a-days, a medical history can be left for the protection of the child involved.
open adoptions have varying levels of information available and can be agreed upon between the two sets of parents.

it's important to find out what type of adoption you are looking into.

I know in my case, I'm adopted, I did get to know my medical history but that's about it.

Parents should first step up and take the adopted child in confidence then tell him his rights and responsibilities.

It is our duty to give respect to adopted child and never let him or her down.

I have just been thinking lately about looking up some information. Not sure I could ever go through with it though.

It's a big decision for you there indeed. Maybe it's a little soon for you after losing your mom, Chris. I would imagine it to be a stressful process and you've been through a lot as it is. I'm not trying to put you off, just saying you perhaps need to give yourself a break and be kind to yourself for a while first.

How hard is it to find anything out, I mean by that to get hold of information?

Not all states even allow reverse adoptions. You'll need a lawyer that specializes in family law to find out and good grounds for that. Just because she won't let you see them isn't enough. I believe that unless visitation rights were granted back then by the courts during the process, you don't have any.

The courts felt she could care for them better than you can. That's why they let her adopt them. You'd need to prove different and that you can provide a responsible, stable home for them all until they are all fully grown. You can't take them back for a while and change your mind.

The simpler solution would be to work things out with your mom about seeing them.

I think that was perhaps "agree with".

You want an honest answer? Personally, I think yes it is. You'll have been out of her life for 11 years then suddenly just show up? That can only be disruptive if she's not expecting or inviting it imho. You don't even know if she'd want to see you or hear any explanation. I feel you're forcing her to make that choice if you initiate contact.

I would leave the decision about when the time is right for any initial contact to her. Just make sure there's a note somewhere on the adoption record or with the lawyers involved or wherever you can do that that you'd be open to her contacting you when she's ready. And that's what I think matters- that it's when SHE is ready, not you. Just because she's 18 doesn't mean she is mentally and emotionally ready to take that step.
