musical -> RE: Greatest Singers of All Time (6/7/2009 12:03:41 AM)

Naming the 5 greatest singers of all time is of course a difficult task, but certain voices come to mind. If we are talking purely technical ability, Luciano Pavarotti qualifies. And for a female, perhaps Joan Sutherland. Now if we focus mainly on popular acclaim, Barbra Streisand might be considered. Streisand had absolute pitch, which allowed her to identify any tone by ear and recreate from memory any pitch she desired. This gave her a huge advantage over most of her competition. Whitney Houston, another diva, should also be added to the five. When she first came out, few female pop singers could emulate her control of the chest voice. The last singer, Sarah Vaughn, couldn't sing a wrong note if she tried. All the other greats not mentioned, such as Celine Dion, Frank Sinatra, and Mariah Carey, quite often lose control of pitch, even if only for a moment. But Sarah Vaughn never sang off pitch, or at least not in her recordings. Music is entirely generated by opinions, but these singers seemed to carry most of the general public's opinions in their favor.
