Thelma, you should consider it a narrow escape. Mine was initially so overbearing I felt smothered. She had 5 sons and no daughters and wanted me to be hers basically. She always said I was the daughter she never had, which was a bit embarrassing for me. Eventually I had to sit her down and have a chat about how much time I could realistically spend with her vs do my work, take care of home, family etc. It was sad really because she had only one other daughter in law and the d-in-law hated her guts, but in hindsight she could have done the same to her years before and built up resentment. After we talked she and I managed to find a level we could both be happy with and I could enjoy her company again but when I was getting in from work to find her at my door night after night after night or phoning all the time, it was getting very old very fast. She no longer calls me nice things since I divorced her son after 16 years (because of his alcoholism). Lots of short words, but not daughter. [X(]
