I'm thinking I need a change of mindset. It's about time I opened my eyes a bit more to the good in the world, so I'm starting this thread about good people, good deeds and generally good happenings that are going on every day. Ordinary people are doing extraordinary things. Kindnesses large and small are out there. Please add some positive vibes to this thread. :)

I'm kicking it off with this story of a great lady who used her own money to build a school in Ethopia.

quote:

When Washington manicurist Lidia Schaefer returned to her native village in Ethiopia, she was troubled by what she saw: children walking three hours each way to attend classes held not in a school, but under a tree.
Lidia Schaefer sold her house and car and set aside tips and part of her salary to raise money for the school.

When she learned in 1998 that one of the girls she'd met -- Medhine -- had been attacked and killed by a hyena after falling behind other children during the long trek home from school, Schaefer knew she had to act. She began setting aside a third of her salary and all of her tips, and later sold her house and car, to raise enough money to build a school for the village.

Finally a video game with a good message attached to it. I love this idea.

quote:

If people played more, the world would be a better place. That’s the view of Austin Hill and Alex Eberts, longtime friends and tech entrepreneurs. And that’s why they’ve created Akoha, a video game that encourages random acts of kindness by mixing online and real-world play.

And a lucky man working 3 jobs to support his family has won $39 million.

quote:

Clyde Persley, who is married and has a 4-year-old daughter, turned in his winning ticket on Tuesday night and should get his first check for about $16 million in four to six weeks, said a California lottery spokeswoman. The 49-year-old Santa Cruz man operates candy-making machines for Santa Cruz Nutritionals, drives a limousine and picks up extra hours at a restaurant.

Maybe diane knows him! He's from California. :)
