fiery -> sore knee (6/19/2009 3:59:17 PM)

Over the last month or so my right knee has buckled like jelly maybe six times when I put my weight on it to get into a standing position. It's painful when I try to get up if I've been kneeling down or sitting on the carpet. I'm consciously favoring the left leg and using that alone for leverage but when I forget and try to stand up, phew! It makes me wince. I'm guessing it's some kind of arthritis starting since there's no redness or swelling and it's not sore at any other time. Any ideas on what it could be or suggestions on what to try?

Christine, you're about the fittest person I know what with you being a surfing babe so I'm hoping you might have an idea about this. [:D]

Hmmm...I have that happen once in awhile too, and it is scary.  It happened in my elbow once while I was at the Dr's and he said , "hey you're too yound for that!"  So with that in mind, I would say, and this is just a guess, that the muscles around the knee that support it are getting weaker, which happens as we age.

Try your best not to favor your other leg though as that can result in bigger problems and even hip issues.  I would try to walk a bit more and even draw out the alphabet with your toes while your sitting...just try to gently keep moving.....

I'm glad you think I'm healthy!  LOL...not lately, but certainly was.  Lately I have had hip issues, stomach issues and leg cramps...I too am not as young as I once was...lol  [;)]

Thanks Christine. It seems to be easing off for now so maybe it'll sort itself. I'm definitely not as conscious of the pain as I was and it's not buckled recently. I was wondering if it was arthritis setting in or something like that. Cheers for the help. :)

It could be, just be aware of it and ice it when it gets sore.  Aleve is good for that kind of pain too.  Glad you're feeling better! [:D]

Thanks, I'll pick up some of that then. Usually I take Ibuprofen of some description, which I thought would help with it being an anti-inflammatory. I appreciate the help. :)

Could really be arthritis.  Do see a doctor to have it checked further.  Have had arthritis for some time now and I only get through the day thanks to my pain relievers.  Tramadol has been so far the best help.  You can ask your doctor about it for further info.

I started taking over the counter naproxen...it seems to help too.  Just a thought....

This might be an old post but I also had the same problem with my knee. I'm just in my early 20s and I was surprised for an idea of arthritis going on, but I figured out to get my blood tested and it happened that my uric acid level was so elevated. Since then, I avoided high-purine diet and worked well.

Sorry I missed your response before! Thank you, fracturedlove. I'll keep that in mind.  :)

Thank you too Christine for the naproxen suggestion.

sacredflower could you share some more about what a high-purine diet is about please? It's not bothered me recently so I don't want to go to the doctors when there's nothing to show him at the moment.

Hi fiery, please check out this site. I hope this helps: http://www.healthcastle.com/gout.shtml . Perhaps it's better to get a blood test done coz I think it's a standard protocol for those who complain about joint pains because of a possible gouty arthritis. But I do hope all is well with you.

Thanks so much for that! I'll have a look at it later tonight in more detail. I took a quick glance at it and it's interesting. Not something I'm familiar with but I do remember that my gran always complained of gout when I was a kid and I never knew what it was.

sacredflower -> RE: sore knee (3/20/2010 1:35:32 PM)

I also didn't know about what gout is until my gran also developed it as she still has right now. On my part, I realized that I've been in a regular meat diet so it's added to the possibility that I have increased my uric acid although it's in a pre-gout stage.

Hmmm...I don't know much about it either.  I always though it had something to do with cherries?!?  No?
