The simple idea that getting married and having children always go hand-in-hand is as outdated as the super large cell phones of the early 1990’s. Few couples today assume that having a child automatically follows a trip down the aisle. Some married couples are choosing not to have children at all.

I like this article. It rings true. Each couple must decide on their own. As a woman choosing to not have her own children, I have thought long and hard about the pros and cons. I have decided this is the best decision for my marriage and life. Others may disagree. Just as parents may sometimes wonder what their lives would be like without, I expect I will wonder the opposite. I am one to reflect on life choices. But having a child just to care for me in my old age seems rather selfish on my end. I would rather save my money and set myself up in a nice retirement community. I dote upon the children of others. I am looking forward to more years of happiness.
Agreed

only selfish individuals would view having children in a marriage as a burden. These are individuals i feel sorry for in those nursing homes. They are the neediest ones too.

Feeling sorry for people not having kids because of being alone in a nursing home?? I'm sorry, but having children doesn't guarantee you a carer in old age. The chance is always there also that you will care for your child for the rest of their life (no one likes to think about it, but happens to plenty of families like mine). What would be nice is, as this article points out, every adult was given the space to pursue the things they genuinely want (children or not) without judgement from those who chose opposite.

Most people I visit in nursing homes actually do have children - the children just never go to see them. Its a good thing that i have time to go and make much of them - some of them are so lonely.
