I don't see the need for that. Critics say it undermines what the school will be doing with them. Two hours a week all summer is a long time for a kid of that age. quote:
Krissy, who turned 5 this month, will be among the youngest kids in class, and her mother emphasizes she isn’t trying to create a superstar student. She just wants to make sure her daughter is prepared to keep up with the other children who are learning their words and numbers, too. All of them will be expected to master various academic skills in the upcoming school year, or risk retention. quote:
The group released a report this spring titled “Crisis in the Kindergarten: Why Children Need to Play in School,” which concludes that kindergartens have changed dramatically in the last two decades “from places where love of learning was thoughtfully nurtured into pressure-cooker classrooms where teachers are required to follow scripts, labor under unrealistic one-size-fits-all standards, and test children relentlessly on their performance. Kindergarten has ceased to be a garden of delight and has become a place of stress and distress.” Article

In california, kindergarten is not mandated, so if your child IS in Kindergarten, they are already well ahead of countless other children. I personally don't feel tutoring is needed, but I do see the importance of beginning children in preschool so that they understand the "time for learning/time for play" routine. On another note, while I agree with the importance of play for children, and needing to learn how to socially interact with other kids their age, I feel that most people have become way too soft when it comes to academics. I absolutely do NOT agree with credit for phoenetics (sp?) in spelling tests, I do not agree with teaching to the tests (or the entire standardized testing system, for that matter), and I do not agree with moving a child ahead in subjects when they have not fully grasped the lesson. of course, most of these issues are later on in the academic process, but it all starts at the beginning. Unfortunately, I think too many parents have left all school age child rearing up to the schools. they expect the school to teach them about way more than reading, writing and math, which means there is LESS time to actually approach those subjects. but, that is another rant entirely - LOL

i believe that it is too young for a child to be tutored but it might be beneficial to introduce some basic academic topics in a fun way

Studies have shown that Americans are working more than ever and it is probably due to this introduction of pressure to succeed at an early age

If they want them to succeed any earlier, they'll be getting tutored in the womb. It's beyond a joke now. quote:

You could ask me the chemical formula for nitrous oxide and I could tell you, or about the history of the Jacobean era and I'd be able to share a little on that. Has any of that been useful to me in life? Not at all. Learning things parrot fashion for the sake of passing a test is useless. Kids should be taught life skills like banking, how to get along in the workplace, social skills and parenting (after the basic grounding of reading, math and writing of course). If they want to specialize after that for a career path, fine, but the foundations should be in educating them in such a way that they can use the information in their day to day lives, not chemical formulas. Ask me how often I use trigonometry now that I had to learn to pass an exam or how often I consult the periodic table of chemical symbols.... I would have much preferred learning how to cook on a budget and iron a shirt right. Parents could teach those skills, that's true but most don't. Education needs to be rethought for kids growing up in today's world, not mine or my mother's. Curriculums should move with the times too.

I am from a non-US country and tutoring kids at that early stage is also a current trend in our education system, but only for those families who are privileged. Although it's never been a proposal here to get the very young kids learn basic life skills, only in our secondary school system. But I think it's a great tool to develop, making it an extra curricular activity, like teaching them what Fiery has said. I remember I was so engrossed with a cashier machine toy when I was kid, that thing could make banking fun for the kids.

You're right, sacredflower! Education can be made fun. I remember lining up the contents of my mother's kitchen cupboard and playing shop with my cash register and plastic money. Obviously some tasks are more suited to an older child's mind and abilities, but I don't see why they can't be taught more practical subjects. In these days of the internet, learning about anything at all is very accessible. You don't need to be in a classroom with a book to learn history or geography anymore.
