I was really surprised to see this article about a mom lobbying for the one she thought would suit her son best. Times must have changed because when mine was small they just went where they were put and parents weren't consulted in any way. quote:
The school, however, placed Stanley in a different class. And to his mother's surprise and delight, the year wound up being so successful for him that Gilbert said she is approaching his pending entry into fourth grade in a new way: by vowing to stay out of the process. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31947478/ns/today-parenting_and_family/

Fiery and Diane, MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!!! SO many parents these days request (or demand) specific teachers. I think it's ridiculous. My kids have all gotten teachers they didn't like. I've always told them there will be lots of people in this world you don't like but you have to learn to get along with them. You said it so well Diane.... "in life you have to learn to get along with everyone, you cannot go through it picking and choosing who you surround yourself with at all times."

The only time I would intervene is if the teacher was giving my kid a hard time...I remember my 4th grade teacher was terrible. He was even verbally abusive sometimes! But as long as they like their job and have the kids' best interest at heart then I don't see why I should get involved.

Excellent point about them all being different. I had some I hated. My Latin teacher picked on me the first lesson I was there before I'd even sat down at my desk! She bawled me out for closing the door behind me. I was last in when we all shuffled in. When I shut the door she went bananas, screeching at me that it was HER door and HER classroom and if SHE wanted the door closed, SHE would DO IT!!! I was mortified. I'd never ever been in trouble in a class and she scared the life out of me. After that I hated her. She wanted me to continue on with Latin (the way it was set up only the top two classes within that grade year were taught the subject for a year) and the following year was when we chose our subjects. I refused because even though I was good at it and she warmed to me after discovering she knew some relative of mine, she was the only Latin teacher. No way was I going to spend another three years in her class! Teachers don't appreciate the damage they do either. Sandy, I agree with you. I think it's wrong that parents should even be allowed to do that unless there's been some kind of big and I mean BIG conflict.
