clover -> how should i handle this? (10/19/2009 9:46:07 AM)

i am now earning money for myself, it's not that much but i'm happy that i have my own money.

i want to buy an external hdd and ipod touch for myself using the money that i have earned so far. but my parents would tell me not to use the money and just save it even when they won't buy me these things. i told them that i'm going to use my money and even after i buy those things, i'm still going to save money. it seems like they didn't know that i know how to save. also, i would also share what i have earned to them so i could help with the household expenses. i know i won't be able to give a big amount but i will still try and help.

is it right for my parents to keep on stopping me from buying the external hdd and ipod touch?
how can i make them see that i will not spend every single cent and that i will save part of what i earn?

thank you

The way we do it in our house, and the way I was raised goes like this:  we save a certain percentage, we give a certain percentage to charity and we were allowed to spend a certain percentage.  Maybe if you came up with a plan like that, your parents would see that you are mature and have thought this out.

Spending all you have is not the way to go...I see what they're saying but if you are working and earning money you should be allowed to spend some of it.  Hope this helps!

thank you for your advise Christine

even when i was younger, i have been saving already. i would keep half of my allowance, i also give part of my allowance to the church and also donate to charities when they go to my school.

i don't know why my parents seem to "forget" that. [;)]

Hmmm, I'm not sure either.  I would try again.  Write everything down, make charts if need be.  Show them what you have done and what your future goals are.  Cut out pics maybe and make a vision board of what you will save for, and what charities you have given to and what you will continue to help with.

My guess if they have a reason for being strict...dig a little...find out what it is..in a mature respectful way.

from what i know about my father and mother's families, they had quite a hard time growing up. my mom said they were not that well-off so i think that maybe the reason why they want me to save.

your suggestions are really good, i would try and do that. maybe they would take me (even a little bit) seriously.

again, thank you very much[:)]

Great advice so far. :) The only thing I can think of is maybe your parents are trying to help you stretch the money, clover. Your job may not last - no one's is safe in this economy - and if you splurge on a big item now, you'll regret it. Remember too Christmas is coming up soon. There will be lots of sales and special discounts in the run up to that when companies start competing for your business. Why buy now when you might get $50 or more off it in less than two months? I'd hang on to my money for a while longer. The deals will be there.

i believe they want that too - to help me stretch the money so i have some even if i lose my job (but hopefully not). i understand their point.

maybe i'll wait for Christmas to take advantage of the sales and discounts[:D] thanks fiery[:)]

I agree, after the holidays everything will be on sale!  Good thinking!

You're welcome, clover. I think there will be plenty of sales even before Christmas too! Businesses know that's the one time people will spend even when they don't have much. Keep an eye on the deals sites. Ask.com has a new section that gathers deals from different places.

There's also http://www.retailmenot.com/ . It does that too. Just Google "deals and coupons".

You're very welcome clover. I think there are newsletters too you can sign up for to keep you updated on the latest deals at retailmenot. Lots of the deals sites offer that.
