ChristineB -> Pancreatic cancer (7/6/2010 10:54:17 AM)

Hi all, I have some bad news.  My Mom wasn't feeling well this past Friday so my Dad took her to the Dr's.  She just had foot surgery and is unable to walk so we assumed it was pain from the cast and dizzy from the meds.

While in the Dr's office she broke out in bruises and turned yellow.  After being rushed to the hospital the Dr's told us she has pancreatic cancer, likely advanced and likely widespread.

I just was hoping you could all send good thoughts and positive energy my way.

Thanks.

Ohhh, Chris. I'm so sorry to hear that. Of course I will. How are you holding up?

ChristineB -> RE: Pancreatic cancer (7/8/2010 9:37:29 AM)

Thank you.  I'm ok, mostly because I feel numb.  She had a petscan today to look for more tumors.  If it hasn't spread she will go to Boston for surgery, if it has, she's coming home today.

Really do wish someone would wake me from this nightmare.  [;)]

Awww, Chris ((((hugs)))). Please keep us posted. You're all in my prayers.

Well, the informal reading is that the cancer has not spread but the mass is wrapped around a duct so they don't know if they can operate.  She is off to Boston today so the surgeon can look at her and decide.

Well, bad news....the surgeon in Boston said it is inoperable so she is coming home today.  [;)][;)][;)][;)][;)][;)]

Ohhh, Christine.[;)][;)][;)][;)] I am so, so, sorry to hear that. I don't know what to say. If there's anything I can do to help you, let me know. There may be times you need someone to talk to that's outside the family. I'm up all hours of the day and night so it's no problem at all to call even if it's very early or very late.

Do you have Skype? If you install that on your computer, voice calls made from one Skype user to another over the internet are free. All you need is a headset with a mic on it, or you can use a normal mic and just listen through your speakers. I have it on mine. It doesn't cost anything to install either.

Thanks Kay, I don't have it but I'll look into it.

To add even more stress, my Mom's cat died yesterday. [;)]

Oh no, that's the last thing she needed... what a shame. Please do get Skype, Chris. It's dead easy to use.

I will..promise!  Right now my laptop isn't working and I have no time to try to figure out why the wireless won't work.  All of a sudden it's saying blocked by firewall...I have tried everything I know and it still is saying that.  Weird?

I don't know. It sounds like something's been reset somewhere in your Security settings that's not allowing it to make that connection. If you upped your firewall security level and didn't list that site as one to allow, that could be it.

If it's the Windows firewall that's not allowing the connection, post on their support forums. There's a post there about someone that's happening to on the Vista forum. They didn't respond to the tech's questions but you could start a new thread giving the information he requested.

Check with your service provider to see if the issue is at their end. I doubt it but they may have suggestions. Also run a virus scan. Some viruses prevent you from connecting.

Well my step son in law by default (lol) fixed it.  It made me feel incredibly old that he had to come to the rescue!

fiery -> RE: Pancreatic cancer (7/27/2010 1:21:22 AM)

That's good, I'm glad you got it all worked out. I know what you mean. If I'm working on a graphic and it involves layers I always need to ask my son to show me how to get back to one I want to change. He gets so mad LOL but it just doesn't stick in my brain! [:(]

How's your mom doing?

ChristineB -> RE: Pancreatic cancer (7/28/2010 11:53:20 AM)

Mom is hanging in there, thanks so much for asking.  She started radiation on Monday and chemo yesterday.  She has mostly been sleeping.  I'm bringing dinner over tonight as eating has been a challenge for her.

I also made several lifestyle changes to help better deal with all of this.  More exercise, different multi vitamins, added green tea and dandelion tea and Glutamine.  Also gave my beloved wine up indefinitely.... [;)]

You're a good daughter. :) Chemo's rough, bless her. Speaking of doing practical things, you may want to look into this and apply on your mom's behalf. It's a non-profit organization that offers free housecleaning services for women with cancer. From their Our Process page:

quote:

We partner with professional residential maid services who are insured and bonded to participate in our foundation. The companies have agreed to take 2 patients at a time and offer four free cleanings – one a month for four months as a way to give back to their community.

We limit the amount of applications that we accept on a daily basis Monday through Thursday. The applications can be filled in online by women with any type of cancer as long as they are currently under cancer treatment.

You can check your location to see if it's available there.

Given the lifestyle changes you're making, you might be interested in this site too I came across, Christine. http://www.chooseyou.com/About.aspx

Hope those help. (((((hugs))))

ChristineB -> RE: Pancreatic cancer (8/1/2010 9:27:24 PM)

Thanks Kay!  I will check them both out.  John and I did manage to sneak away to the beach yesterday and had a fabulous time...today though I slept all day.  The few ocean moments just aren't enough to heal anything right now I'm afraid.

ChristineB -> RE: Pancreatic cancer (8/1/2010 9:30:21 PM)

Checking out Choose You now, the housecleaning doesn't come to our area, but that's what she's got me for, LOL![:)]

fiery -> RE: Pancreatic cancer (8/2/2010 9:31:54 PM)

LOL, oh I know you'd do it but you need to be able to keep your own strength up too. :) Good to hear you guys managed a break even for a little while.

ChristineB -> RE: Pancreatic cancer (8/2/2010 10:21:43 PM)

We had a good visit tonight.  She looked good and it was great to see her laugh....even a little.  It is all still numb though....mostly.....

I'm glad to hear she was in good spirits. It's very hard to watch, I know. My gran had breast cancer. Cherish those moments. Is your mom at home just now or do they have her in the hospital or a hospice?
