Hi.  I’m Dana and I’m 27.  I’ve had migraine since I was 16 and have been treating the pain by using fioricet.  Me and my husband, married for 2 years now, are planning to have a baby this year but am worried that the drug I take might hurt our baby.  Do you know of any possible complications that fioricet may cause to an unborn baby?  Thanks for the help.

Congratulations Dana.  There had been no reports of fioricet causing any harm to an unborn child.  I checked the web for it and asked a doctor friend.  But of course, a doctor’s checkup or consultation will be necessary for further info.

definitely check with your doctor.  I have suffered from migraines for years and could not take my medication when I was pregnant.  I was allowed to take tylenol once in a while and also found other methods of dealing with the headaches, like ice packs and hot showers.  fortunately, during my pregnancy, I only had about 1 migraine a month instead of the usual multiple a week.  good luck!!

Dana, do NOT take advice from a nameless person that claims to have talked to a doctor friend and looked online. This drug comes under pregnancy category C with the FDA.

quote:

FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Fioricet is harmful to an unborn baby. Before taking Fioricet, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use Fioricet without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

contact, just because there are no reports of it being harmful doesn't mean it isn't! There was no reason to phrase it as a congratulations. It is an UNKNOWN quantity according to the FDA. No pregnant woman is going to risk her unborn baby's health when they don't have to. That was an irresponsible thing to say. You didn't look very hard if you didn't find what I did.

Dana, don't take it until you've spoken to YOUR doctor. Please read the link too for a full description of the drug.

I took fiorciet during my pregnancy for migraines, tried to keep it to a minimum, of course. Can't remember how often, but my two daughters -- now 20 and 14 years old -- were born healthy, grew up w/o any major medical problems, and are both thriving!

Keep in mind that almost everything is FDA pregnancy Category C. Keeps them out of trouble with the lawyers.

But all you migraineurs, take note: the first three months after you give birth might be rough sledding. Your estrogen level plummets, which trigger migraines for a lot of women. It was really hell for me, both times. Wish I had known then what I know now. I would have asked about some short-term estrogen supplements, assuming it would have been OK with the breatfeeding. They now have transdermal sprays and patches that deliver low doses but maybe enough to keep you leveled out.
