Missouri lawmakers voted overwhelmingly Friday to repeal part of a contentious new law that had prohibited teachers from chatting privately with students over Internet sites such as Facebook. If the repeal is signed by Gov. Jay Nixon, Missouri's law restricting online communications would instead be replaced with a new requirement for public school districts to develop their own policies on the use of electronic media between employees and students. http://www.npr.org/2011/09/23/140745900/mo-lawmakers-reject-teacher-facebook-restrictions What do you think, should students and teachers be able to have private chats online outwith work-related sites? Is there really a need for that?

There is NO need for that whatsover. That is just opening the door for issues. Student do not need to speak to teachers other than during school hours.

I don't think so either. Actually I'd think it was well overstepping the boundaries and shifting the relationship from professional to personal. I'm surprised teachers or schools would tolerate that. Fine and dandy to have a place online where the kids could report concerns like bullying or concerns about students-a simple contact form on the school website would work, and they could allow anonymous reports too by simply not requiring a mandatory email address to submit the form. But that to me being Facebook friends is very shaky ground on the teacher's part especially as it could look very inappropriate or even be suggestive of an intimate relationship. And heck, teachers don't need to be on call 24/7 either! No wonder teachers have no respect from students nowadays if they act like their buddies rather than an authority figure. You can't have it both ways.

I totally agree, not to mention when I'm on Facebook I am usually relaxing with a glass of wine, as the teachers may be too. Not an ideal setting for such conversations at all. Time and place.

Time and place. Good point. There's too much of a blurring of the boundaries there for my liking between teachers and students. That your teacher would socialize with you in any way was unthinkable when I was in school and most definitely frowned upon at the very minimum.
