According to a new study, they offer more protection for those of 4 and under if there's an accident. quote:
Infants are typically switched from a rear- to a forward-facing seat when they reach about 20 pounds, which occurs at roughly 8 months of age for an average boy, study authors Dr. Elizabeth A. Watson and Dr. Michael J. Monteiro, from Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, U.K., note. They add, however, that growing evidence suggests it may be best to delay the switch until 4 years of age. Article

I think my car seat says it right on the seat itself...hmmm, I'll have to look again. I think you an't do it in the front seat due to the air bag, not sure about the back seat though

where would the child put his/her feet??? my kids were frustrated with being unable to stretch in their seats well before they were a year old. as far as front or back seats ... children are considered safer in the back seat, but as long as there is no airbag, then the front seat is acceptable. If there is no on and off switch on your airbag and you are forced to put a child in that seat, it is recommended that you place the passenger seat as far back as possible to avoid injury. as far as I am concerned - child safety seat laws are insane. I allowed my 60 pound 5 year old to sit in a regular booster seat before she was supposed to because she was uncomfortable in too small child seat and knew how to sit properly in a seatbelt and booster. on the other hand, my youngest is very small for her age so she will be comfortable in her seat long after the law allows. I personally will keep her in it as long as possible because she refuses to sit still in a belted seat alone. and still we have those that will never follow the laws ... this afternoon I passed a small passenger car with 3 adults sitting in the back seat and 2 children sitting on laps.

Arghhh, that makes me so angry!!!! Even if it wasn't law, you'd do it for the safety of your child, wouldn't you??? Not only that, but the child can injure the person in front of them too. We had a shocking public service video in the UK for a seatbelt campaign and it was an older boy flying forward from the back seat and hitting his mother in an accident. It was meant to shock people into belting up and was very effective. You don't think about those things until you see them in something like that.

Yeah...where would they put their feet? AJ barely fits now! We put him in the back set, facing forward in his car seta. I think it is the safest.

Since it's graphic, I'll not post the link here but if you (or anyone else) wants it, let me know and I'll PM you the link. Personally I feel it's something older kids and adults should see. Sometimes you need to be shocked out of your complacency for the message to get through. Bear in mind this was a government Public Service Ad and they didn't air it until after the 9PM watershed, which was when shows unsuitable for young children could be aired. They obviously felt it was worth it. It came out in 2007 and is one of the few I recall very clearly. Just don't watch it for the first time with any kids around. Then you can decide for yourself if they should see it.
