It’s my pleasure to report that the great “please” experiment of 2011 is getting some pretty pleasing results.

Unlike past attempts to get my kids to do a task consistently -- make their beds, stop hitting each other -- this one has actually worked, thanks to consequences that are immediate and meaningful.

The experiment, now cemented into Mom Policy, goes like this: You ask for something without saying "please," and I simply don’t respond, or just clear my throat loudly as a hopeful hint.

How did you teach your children to say please and thank you?

Again, I am so lucky! He is nearly six and says please and thank you nearly 100% of the time! When he doesn't we pause, or put a hand to our ear, like ahem...and he says it! I can't imagine it any other way.

Neither can I, Christine! Saying please and thank you was drummed into us from as soon as we could speak and I did the same with mine. I'm dismayed things have changed and it's not done automatically by parents the way it used to be. Yet another parenting standard falls by the wayside.

I agree! I know I sound like an "old person" but I do think this new generation has very little in the way of manners, and don't get me started on hard work?!?

Arghh, I know it! It's funny in a way how every generation thinks the generations that come after them have it easier, but they really do! Eventually we'll have a generation that will be born and just sit in a chair all their lives, because every one seems to do less than the one before.
