I got a rice cooker the other day because I'm hopeless at making it without it turning to mush. So now I'm all tickled with my new gadget and need some recipes that use cooked rice! :)

In my house rice is a staple. While I presonally love a sweet and sticky rice, my family prefers a little variety. I always cook my rice in chicken broth instead of water, and I always throw in a little sugar to sweeten it up. then I flavor it with italian dressing, or teriyaki sauce, or or even a tomato sauce and toss in meat and veggies. makes for a very easy casserole and is always handy on nights where there isn't a lot of time or I am runing low on groceries - lol

let me know how it works. when I was a kid, plain white rice with butter is what we were served, I couldn't stand it. I tried it with just a little sugar and wow! now I cook it with sugar, just to sweeten the broth. my family thinks it sounds gross - sugar and rice? I haven't told them they eat it that way all the time ;)

Top off the buttered rice with a mix of cinnamon and sugar. Mmmmm Mmmmm Tonight I cut up some boneless, skinless chicken breasts and browned them in a little olive oil. Then I mixed up some gravy and let it simmer for while. I seasoned the chicken with S&P and some all seasoned salt. I served the chicken and gravy over plain white rice and it was so yummy! My sister has a recipe for chicken and dirty rice. I'll see if I can find it to post at a later date. How about rice pudding? Do you like that?

Ooooo, thank you ladies! Sorry I missed this before. I love making it into rice pudding with sugar and milk and some cinnamon. Mine's is just chucking it in though Thelma LOL, I'm sure you'll have a better recipe. Thanks, I'd like to hear them both. LOL about the jambalaya Christine. I'll try that way then. Never cook any longer than you have to I say. Diane, the teriyaki sounds good. What I've been doing is just making plain rice in a batch then freezing it so I can make rice pudding if I want and use other portions to stir fry. It's so easy taking it right out the freezer and just throwing in veggies and soy sauce. They're bored to death with that now LOL. I'll try your variations too, thanks!

I forgot to mention to add vanilla to the rice pudding and some butter! That was half a recipe there LOL. I use lots of vanilla- about a tablespoon - but just taste it as you go along and start small. I made some the other day after reading this thread.

Just in case any of you have rice cookers too, here's a piece on other ways to use it apart from just for rice! I'll be making the risotto in it. Article

I forgot this was a multicooker and tried steaming cauliflower and cabbage on two different nights in it. It was done to perfection! I was really impressed because I never have much luck with steaming things usually. I always end up doing them too long. But I followed the cookbook chart that came with it and it couldn't have been better.

We bought fresh asparagus for the first time in my life today. Do I know how to cook it? Heck, no. Will I mess it up? Probably. Vote now on the likelihood of my success! LOL. I'm a trier.

ORIGINAL: ChristineB Yayyy, you'll do fine. You can either steam it or put it in the oven with some olive oil and salt and pepper....I promise...you cannot fail!!! Oh yeah? Well I did LOL. Actually half failed because I steamed it as per the booklet and it was fine. Then I made the mistake of trying to keep it warm in the steamer because hubby had dozed off and I was waiting for him to wake up. By the time he did it was limp and soggy. I really liked it but he wasn't so keen. But then he missed tasting it at its best. I'll do it again. How long in the oven and what temp please? Do I need to cover it or anything? Someone at work told him it's good stir fried too.
