Parents, teachers and child psychology experts are divided on whether or not paying for academic performance is a good idea. On the one hand, some school districts that have instituted payment for book-reading have seen improvement of reading comprehension. On the other hand, students who are paid for good standardized test scores do about as well as they would have without the financial incentive. So what’s the right way to handle the grade/money connection in your house?

What's your opinion on this? Did you get paid for good grades as a child?

I think you should give a different reward instead of money.

HA!! That's what I have to say about that! PAID?!? Seriously? OMG! We we EXPECTED to get good grades, getting them was not a bonus that deserved a reward of ANY kind. Wow!

Welcome to FamilyLobby.com, zhianzee. :) What kind of different reward are you thinking about?

It was expected of us too, Christine. We did get a very modest cash reward if it was particularly good, ie straight A's, and my Dad happened to be in a good mood that day. I'm talking about enough to buy a tape or a book, nothing enormous. But there was never any guarantees you'd get anything no matter how good it was.

Hmm, I don't remeber anything, but my sister (older) was a brain so I was always held to that standard. If we wanted money we had to work.

I've never paid my children for good grades, but I know people that do.  the other day my daughter asked me if I'd pay her for the 5 goals she scored in soccer ... I laughed.  she said her friend gets paid for goals, I told her that it's her job to score on the field when she is playing as a striker, playing hard and doing well should be reward enough.

Ha! Good answer. You sure taught her a lot more than the other parents did, even though she doesn't know it yet probably. :)

I agree with Zhainzee. Instead of paying money we can use some other technique for kids. I think money can spoil the situation.

I'll ask you the same question then, toddler20. :) What kind of different reward are you thinking about?

We don't. No way. If he struggles with a certain subject or issue we do offer incentive like maybe a movie night or something, or maybe he can have his toys back, lol!
