Traffic safety should be among a child’s first lessons for the new school year, experts suggest. Each year in the United States, more than 25,000 pedestrians aged 5 to 14 are injured, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Kids who are struck by cars are among the most severely injured children we see in the emergency department. Because of their height, when a car hits a child, the impact is to the head and torso. This puts the brain and internal organs at risk for serious injuries,” Dr. Michelle Macy, a clinical lecturer of emergency medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, said in U-M Health System news release. Now is the time to educate children about pedestrian safety. Article

I think parents of school age children should revisit traffic safety as well. in my neighborhood the children do get caught up in chatting and such, but the parents dropping off/picking up these kids are caught up in their own issues as well! I cannot believe how many moms I see drive thru the carpool lane with their phone to their ear (it's illegal in my state - a hands free set is required), they zip in and out of traffic, they ignore the crossing guards or try to squeeze in before they stop the flow to allow kids to cross, and they drop their kids off IN TRAFFIC!

Good grief! That's awful. Not much point in taking them to school yourself if you're going to endanger them more than riding on the school bus would! I HATE seeing people driving with cells to their ears. I don't know if it's illegal in AR but if it's not it should be. We nearly ran into the back of a car the other day because the guy was chatting on his phone and had almost missed his turn so he slammed on the brakes. I saw the phone to his ear when we got close to him. Idiot. I'd already wondered why his car was all over the lane.

yep - and just recently our governor raised the fines on driving while texting or talking on the phone without a hands free device. I just wish the city would get out and enforce it now - especially at the schools! our city could make bank on tickets in the school zones alone! lol

NOTHING can't wait the few minutes it takes to drop them off safely. They can send their calls to voicemail if they are that worried about missing something. Unfortunately it will likely take someone being killed or seriously hurt before they do. As you say it's easy money for them, especially if they pass people in an unmarked car. I feel ill when I see them driving and so not in control of a two-ton death machine. We had an awful tragedy here earlier this year where a young girl hubby worked with was killed. (We know details because her sister also worked there.) She was on the back of her husband's motorbike and they were STOPPED at the traffic lights at an intersection at night. The woman that hit them was in a big truck behind them, on the phone, and apparently didn't even SEE them she was so busy with it. She ran right over her. Tragic. The EMT's called for an airvac but she didn't last long enough for it to get there and died at the scene, bless her. Makes me sick to think the truck driver walked away from that and she didn't.
