I'm thinking about getting a real one for the very first time this year. I have no idea how to care for them though! What do you think, is fake a better option?

WHAT?! No real Christmas tree EVER? I have only ever had real trees for Christmas. I get a 10 footer as big and fat as I can find. LOL This year however we are cutting one down on my parents property. Dad wants to thin out the yard. I must say, I have seen some really nice artificial trees though. Over the years I have tried all the gimmicks to keep a Christmas tree from drying up. The only tried and true trick I have found is keeping your tree watered and using HOT tap water. As hot as you've got. We have had our trees sprouting with new growth when we've taken them down after the New Year. If you do get a real tree, make sure it was freshly cut. Once you get the tree home, cut off the bottom before putting in the stand. This will help the tree soak up water and help keep it from drying out. If you opt for a Scotch Pine....you won't have to worry about dropping needles. It resists drying and if permitted to become dry does not drop its needles. They make very pretty Christmas trees and their branches are strong if you're one who likes heavy ornaments. I don't think either tree is better.....it all comes down to personal preference.

Nope, never ever had a real tree. :) You make it sound easy! When you say you need to water it, how much water does it need? Are we talking a bucketful or ? And what do you do with it indoors, do you have to plant it in a pot of soil or what? I sound like an idiot I know but I've never had one! :)

I usually fill our tree stand with a pitcher of water ... I fill it to the top of the stand, just before it spills over, and I check the level daily. you never know how long a tree has gone without water, so some trees will soak up that water quick, and others will take longer. usually the week OF christmas I won't water it at all because I take the tree down on 12/26 ... if there is water still in the stand, it spills on the floor. I did see a new thing out this year ... it monitors the water in the stand and it also acts as an ornament and has a hose that you can pour the water INTO for the tree - beats having to crawl under the darn thing every day. I will have to find a link for it today

Hey, I thought that was a stroke of genius! Just wipe the tinsel off it before using it at the table and no one would know LOL. After all that discussion, we went fake. It was just too easy to throw one in the trolley and be safe in the knowledge it won't look like death warmed up in a week because it got TLC from yours truly.

LMAO!! I'm not sure I even have a turkey baster, I mean I know I did once, but I haven't seen it in a while ... I should probably check the kids' rooms we picked ours out last week ... in the rain! it actually worked out well, we were the only ones there. this year hubby decided NOT to cut off the branches at the bottom so watering it has been a messy chore - and I usually need to brush all the needles off outside afterward.

ORIGINAL: ChristineB We have a fake one too. You know what's funny though? I work for a city that is part of tree city USA. We give away seedlings for Arbor Day, drinks for the Tour Des Trees but cut one down a huge tree to be in the front of City Hall. Does that make sense to anyone? That does seem a little ironic. But at least they're doing something to give back unlike other cities who just chop down a tree! I had to look up tree city USA. Interesting program! I'll add the link. http://www.arborday.org/programs/treeCityUSA/index.cfm
